Pouring rain and cold temperatures put no stop to Walker’s 11th Annual Play4TheCure Field Hockey Play Day on Saturday, September 30, 2023. The team hosted the event to kick off Cancer Awareness Month and secure donations for the National Foundation for Cancer Research.

Walker’s Field Hockey program has been raising money for cancer research through Play4TheCure fundraising events since 2009. However, the players thought they could do more to involve other teams and raise even more funds. In 2011, the team decided to run a four-team middle school play day. The play day has since grown to include teams from across the state and beyond. This year’s event saw 13 teams from eight Connecticut towns, including Avon, Canton, Glastonbury, Newington, Simsbury, West Hartford, Wethersfield, and Wilton, as well as a team from Longmeadow, Massachusetts.

Walker’s Varsity Head Coach Mimi Duran reflects, “The Play4TheCure Play Day has always been a special day for our program, bringing players, families, and friends together for a greater cause. Words cannot express how grateful I am to be surrounded by such a caring and generous community.”

The event raised an impressive total of approximately $4,450 while celebrating survivors, remembering loved ones, and fighting for a cure.
