Game Summary
The Ethel Walker School’s varsity soccer team earned a big win on Saturday afternoon when they hosted Wilbraham & Monson Academy in a WWNEPSSA contest. Walker’s had lost to WMA 2-0 each of the past two seasons, but after falling behind 1-0 early, the hosts put up seven unanswered goals to win 7-1 on the day.
After Walker’s scored early, but the goal was disallowed due to offside, Wilbraham responded and tried to take the momentum. They scored on their first shot of the game in the sixth minute when they broke down the right side of the field and hit a shot high to the near post. Eight minutes later, Allison Hayes ’25 scored her first of the day on an assist from Jani Weber ’26. Two and half minutes after that, Hayes gave the home side the lead for good on an assist from Esther Asamoah ’28. It was Asamoah’s first point of the season in her first game for Walker’s, and Hayes’s shot was a rocket that rattled off the under side of the crossbar.
In the 24th minute, Maya Atwood ’26 scored her fourth goal of the season when she took a great pass from Ayden Riendeau ’26 in stride and one-timed it into the bottom right corner. The first half ended with Walker’s adding a fourth goal 45 second before the break. Liv O’Donnell recorded her first assist of the season when she played a long ball through to two different players making diagonal runs. Weber ’26 pressured the goalie first and the ball deflected into the path of Gigi Peña ’26 for her seventh goal of the season. Emma Mazur ’27 recorded three saves in the first half for Walker’s en route to her second win of the season.
Weber added her name to the scorebook four minutes after halftime when she finished off a great run from Hayes to give Walker’s a four-goal cushion. Two minutes later, Emily Sanchez ’26 scored her third goal in as many games. All three of her goals have come directly from the corner kick. In the 52nd minute, Hayes completed her first career hat-trick when Peña found her on a great through ball. On the season, Hayes now has eight goals and seven assists in seven games while Peña has added seven goals and seven assists.
Walker’s will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Wallingford for a key Founder’s League matchup against Choate Rosemary Hall. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00.
