Game Summary
On Wednesday afternoon, The Ethel Walker School’s varsity soccer team hosted Canterbury for a WWNEPSSA Class C contest. Walker’s scored three goals in the opening five minutes and took a 6-0 lead into halftime. On the day, they finished with a 9-1 victory and now boast a 3-0 record at home on the season.
Gigi Peña ’26 opened the scoring just over two minutes into the match when she stole a pass and finished into the bottom left corner. Allison Hayes ’25 made it 2-0 less than 90 seconds later when Emma Mazur ’27 recorded an assist on a long punt that Hayes used to her advantage to put away the breakaway. For Mazur, it was a big day recording nine saves in her first career win for the Wildcats.
In the fifth minute, Kayla Whalen ’25 played a great through pass to Ayden Riendeau ’26 who slotted home the shot for a three-goal cushion. Peña then competed her first hat-trick of the season with two goals in a 53-second span. Jani Weber ’26 and Caroline Hayes ’27 each added an assist to their stat line on the two goals. Weber finished off the first half scoring with 11:30 remaining on an assist from Peña. Weber’s shot rattled off the inside of the left post for the goal.
In the second half. Maya Atwood scored her third goal of the season when she headed home a corner kick from Emily Sanchez ’26. The visitors would get on the board next when they attacked the left side of the field and ripped a shot into the upper near corner for their lone score of the afternoon.
Allison Hayes scored her second of the day on another assist from Peña to make it 8-1 before Sanchez added the final tally on a direct shot from the corner kick. It was the second time in as many games that Sanchez has completed that feat. On the day, Walker’s took 18 shots and forced Canterbury’s goalies into five saves.
The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday when they host Wilbraham and Monson in another WWNEPSSA contest. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00.
