Game Summary

On Saturday afternoon, the varsity soccer team at The Ethel Walker School traveled to Washington, CT for a match at the Frederick Gunn School. Walker’s scored the opening two goals of the game and came away with a 3-1 victory to end a three-game losing streak.
In the opening half of play, the Wildcats jumped on the scoreboard 12 minutes into the contest when Martha O’Donnell ’23 scored her first of the season. Lucie Martinelli ’27 and Ayden Riendeau ’26 combined in the middle of the field as Martinelli took the space and ripped a shot to the back post. Gunn’s goalie made a nice save, but O’Donnell was first to the rebound to put Walker’s on the board. Seven minutes later, Riendeau scored on a great individual effort to double the visitor’s advantage.
Frederick Gunn scored 19 seconds before halftime when they earned a penalty kick after a handlball on the edge of the box. Walker’s outshot their hosts 12-5 in first half action, and Jenna Hamel ’25 made three saves in Ethel Walker’s net.
The visitors continued to keep the momentum throughout the rest of the game as they pushed forward during the entire second half. On the day, they finished with 21 saves and forced Gunn’s goalkeeper into 12 saves. With 20 minutes remaining, Walker’s doubled their advantage when Sophie Martinelli ’25 scored her fifth goal of the season. Lucie Martinelli recorded her second assist of the game when her throw in landed in the box and Sophie ripped it home from near the penalty spot.
Walker’s will host cross-town rival Westminster on Monday afternoon in their next contest. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
