Game Summary
On Saturday afternoon, The Ethel Walker School’s varsity soccer team earned their first road win of the season when they traveled to Marianapolis for a WWNEPSSA Class C matchup. The game was a back-and-forth affair, and in the end, Walker’s scored the final three goals to come out on top 5-3.
In the 11th minute, Gigi Peña ’26 was fouled in the penalty box and Maya Atwood ’26 scored her first of the day to put the road team ahead 1-0. Marianapolis scored 14 minutes later to tie it at one apiece. Just three minutes after that, Walker’s restored their lead when Emily Sanchez ’26 took a free kick from near midfield and found Allison Hayes ’25 out wide on the left sideline. Hayes played it across the box where Peña finished with a one-time effort at the back post.
Marianapolis would score with 16 seconds left before halftime to tie the game, and then they took a 3-2 lead less than three minutes after the break. Their lead did not last long though as Walker’s tied the game when another free kick from Sanchez was met by a teammate in the penalty box. This time she found Jani Weber ’27 whose first touch went into the path of a Marianapolis defender resulting in an own goal.
Peña and Atwood would each add a second to their individual tally on the day. Peña’s came in the 52nd minute to give the visitors the lead for good while Sanchez was once again setting up a goal. Her 74th-minute corner kick found Atwood’s head to put the game out of reach.
Walker’s will return home on Wednesday when they play Founders League and in-town rival Westminster. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:30.
