Our Middle School debate team had a great first debate of the year on December 14 at Smith Middle School in Glastonbury. The motion was: this House regrets the worldwide proliferation of surveillance cameras. Every team won two of their three rounds, which is especially difficult as there are now two groups – Novice and Open. Walker’s had one Novice team – Carly Wilkes ’26, Alessandra LeGeyt ’26 and Ruby Dawson ’25 –and two teams in the Open division: Kayce Campurciani ’24 and Emily Ness ’24 made up one team, and Charlotte Furia ’25, Nellie Kenney ’25 and Zaria St. Clair ’25 made up the other.
Carly Wilkes ’26, in her first tournament, was ranked first in two of her debates and second in the third, and Charlotte Furia ’25 was Walker’s high scorer, placing fifteenth out of 91 debaters in the open division. Hooray Sunray! Their next tournament will be held on January 25, and they will be debating on the motion about requiring women on corporate boards.
